Mastering Ledger Search & Filters
🔍 Mastering Ledger Search & Filters: Finding Your Financial Needle in a Haystack
Section titled “🔍 Mastering Ledger Search & Filters: Finding Your Financial Needle in a Haystack”After a few months on the road, your Ledger will be packed with hundreds of transactions. Finding that specific ferry receipt from last summer or calculating exactly how much you spent on fuel during your two weeks in the Pyrenees shouldn’t be a chore.
We built Vanlife Assistant with a high-octane search and filter engine that allows you to slice, dice, and query your data in seconds. Whether you are sitting at a cafe or driving down a highway, here is how to find exactly what you need.
⌨️ The Search Bar: Instant Recall
Section titled “⌨️ The Search Bar: Instant Recall”At the very top of the Ledger is your most direct tool: the Search Bar. This isn’t just a simple text matcher; it is a deep-data search that scans your entire history as you type.
- Vendors: Type “Shell,” “Tesco,” or “Decathlon” to see every visit to those shops.
- Notes & Memos: If you bought a generic item at a hardware store but wrote “Water pump replacement” in the transaction notes, searching “pump” will bring it right up.
- Exact Amounts: Looking for a specific charge? Type the exact number (e.g., “50.00”) to find all matching transactions.
✨ Magic Feature: Deep Search The search bar is smart enough to scan your Memos. This means you can tag your transactions with your own keywords (like #upgrade or #gift) and find them instantly later, even if they aren’t in the same category!
🎛️ The Filter Bar: Professional Data Slicing
Section titled “🎛️ The Filter Bar: Professional Data Slicing”Just below the search bar is a horizontally scrolling row of Filter Chips. The true power of the Ledger comes from stacking these filters together. You can find “Groceries” bought on your “Travel Credit Card” “Last Month” with just three taps.
- Type (Kind): Narrow your view to only Expenses, Income, or Transfers. Filtering out transfers is a great way to see a clean view of your actual daily spending.
- Account & Category: View transactions for a single bucket of money (e.g., your “Emergency Cash” stash) or a specific category group (e.g., all “Transport” costs).
- Sorting: Change the view from Newest First to Oldest First, or sort by Amount (High → Low) to instantly spot your most expensive purchases and see where the budget went.
📅 Date Range Queries: Your Financial Time Machine
Section titled “📅 Date Range Queries: Your Financial Time Machine”Vanlife spending is rarely consistent from month to month, so we built the most flexible Date Filter on the market.
- Snapshot Ranges: Instantly snap the Ledger to show only “This Month” or “Last Month”.
- Custom Range (The Trip Leg Isolator): Trips don’t always fit into calendar months. If you spent 10 days driving through a specific country, set a Custom Range by tapping your start and end dates on the calendar. The Ledger will instantly recalculate to show you the exact cost of that specific adventure.
🎙️ Voice Search: Hands-Free Power
Section titled “🎙️ Voice Search: Hands-Free Power”When you’re behind the wheel and need to know if you can afford that expensive campsite, you don’t need to touch the screen at all. The app’s Voice Assistant understands natural language for time and spending.
- Rolling Ranges: Ask, “How much did I spend in the last 7 days?”
- Specific Windows: Ask, “What did I spend between March and May?”
- Merchant Lookups: Ask, “When did I last pay for insurance?” or “What did I spend at Shell last week?”
💡 Pro-Tip: The One-Tap Reset If you’ve applied multiple complex filters and want to get back to your main list, don’t waste time untoggling them one by one. A convenient “X” (Reset) button appears at the end of the filter bar—tap it to clear everything and start fresh!
