Exporting Your Data (CSV)

📤 Exporting Your Data: Take Your Finances Anywhere

Section titled “📤 Exporting Your Data: Take Your Finances Anywhere”

We built Vanlife Assistant to be the ultimate, beautiful financial command center. But let’s be realistic: sometimes you just need to get your hands dirty in a raw spreadsheet.

Whether you need to hand a pristine record of your expenses over to an accountant for tax season, you want to build your own wildly complex pivot tables, or you just want the peace of mind of having a hard, offline backup on your laptop before you drive into a dead zone for a month—the CSV Export feature is your best friend.

With a few taps, the app instantly liberates your financial data into a universal format that can be opened by Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, or any other spreadsheet software on the planet.

We didn’t just build a lazy “dump everything” button. The export engine is highly customizable so you can grab exactly the data you need, and nothing you don’t.

  • Precision Time Travel: You don’t have to wade through years of data if you don’t want to. You can easily filter your export down to a specific start and end date. The engine is smart enough to grab every single transaction right up until 11:59 PM on your end date. This is absolutely perfect for grabbing a neat package of “Tax Year 2025” or isolating the expenses for “That one month we spent in Norway.”
  • Chronological Clarity: Your data is automatically sorted with the newest transactions at the top, making it immediately readable the second you open the file.
  • The Kitchen Sink: The export doesn’t skimp on details. It neatly organizes your Date, Income/Expense Kind, Exact Amount, Vendor, Category, Account, Transfer Targets (for when you move money between your own accounts), and every single note or Memo you’ve written into clean, separated columns.

Magic Feature: Bulletproof Memory Have you ever used an app, deleted an old budget category you no longer use, and accidentally ruined all your historical data? Not here. Vanlife Assistant intelligently “caches” the text names of your categories on every transaction. Even if you completely delete the “Van Build” category next year, your CSV export will still perfectly remember and label all those old hardware store trips!

Most budgeting apps export your money and call it a day. Because this is Vanlife Assistant, your CSV export includes critical travel data seamlessly attached to your money.

Every single row of your spreadsheet also exports:

  • The Country Code: Exactly what country you were standing in when you bought that item.
  • The Odometer Reading: The exact mileage of your vehicle at the moment of the transaction.
  • Scheduled Flags: A true/false flag showing if this was an automated, recurring bill.

💡 Pro-Tip: Tax Season Superpowers Having the Country and Odometer data attached directly to your financial exports is an absolute lifesaver. It allows you to instantly prove to your accountant (or the government) exactly how many miles you drove for business purposes, calculate your exact fuel efficiency over a long expedition, or prove to border agents exactly how much time and money you spent in a specific Schengen zone!

Because this is your sensitive financial data, the export happens entirely locally on your device. The app doesn’t send your data to a cloud server to build the file. It formats everything, carefully escapes special characters (so a stray comma in your grocery memo doesn’t break your spreadsheet columns!), and generates the file right in your hand.

Because it’s generated locally, it works perfectly offline. You then have the power to AirDrop it to your Mac, save it to your Files app, or securely email it to your accountant once you hit cell service.

Raw spreadsheet data is incredibly powerful, but sometimes you need something a little more presentation-ready. If you want a beautiful, visual summary of your finances that you can read like a magazine, check out our automated reporting tools!
