Net Worth and Asset Distribution

Tracking your daily spending is important, but true financial peace of mind comes from understanding your big picture. Are you actually losing money every month, or is your savings account interest keeping you afloat?

Vanlife Assistant uses your Account balances, Ledger history, and Vehicle value to build a comprehensive picture of your total wealth.

To view your advanced wealth metrics, go to the Accounts tab and tap the giant Total Net Worth card at the top of the screen.

At the top of your Accounts tab, you will see your Total Net Worth. This number is calculated by adding up all your positive assets (Bank Accounts, Cash, and your Van’s value) and subtracting your liabilities (Credit Cards, Loans).

(Remember: You can exclude specific accounts or vehicles from this number in their individual settings!)

If you have entered an Interest Rate for your savings accounts or investments, the app does something magical. Tap the Net Worth card to expand it, and you will see an Est. Passive Income breakdown. The app calculates exactly how much money your wealth is generating for you Daily, Monthly, and Yearly, completely automatically. It is a great morale boost on an expensive travel day!

When you tap into the Net Worth dashboard, the first thing you see is your Trend Chart.

This chart maps your wealth over time, showing you if your net worth is growing or shrinking.

  • Historical Accuracy: The app is incredibly smart. It doesn’t just look at today’s balance. It takes your current balance and reverse-engineers your entire Ledger history to plot exactly what your wealth was in previous months!
  • Time Ranges: Use the segmented picker at the top to zoom in on the last 6 Months, 1 Year, or view your All Time history.
  • Monthly Breakdown: Below the chart, you will see a list of every month, showing exactly how much your net worth went up (green arrow) or down (red arrow) compared to the previous month.

If you have multiple bank accounts, cash stashes, and a van, it can be hard to visualise exactly where your money is.

The Asset Distribution Treemap solves this by drawing a colourful, spatial map of your wealth.

How to read the Treemap: Think of the entire rectangular area as your total Net Worth. The app then slices this large rectangle into smaller blocks, where each block represents a specific account, asset, or liability.

  • Block Size: The physical size of the box is directly proportional to the amount of money inside it. A massive box means a large chunk of your wealth is stored there. A tiny box represents a smaller balance.
  • Colours: Different types of accounts use different colour themes to help you distinguish them at a glance (e.g., cool colours for liquid cash and bank accounts, distinct colours for liabilities).
  • Major vs Minor Holdings: To keep the chart clean and readable, the app automatically splits your wealth. Large accounts (over £1,000) are grouped under Major Holdings, while smaller accounts (like a £50 emergency cash stash) are tucked neatly into a Minor Holdings section.
  • Vehicles: Your van will appear here as a distinct, warm-coloured block, clearly showing how much of your total net worth is tied up in your physical rig vs. liquid cash!
